CHARACTERISTICS
Feed raw material. Common evening-primrose (Oenothera biennis) has a life span of two years (biennial), growing up to 2 meters tall. The central erect plant stem has many lanceolate leaves.The yellow flowers open visibly fast every evening producing an interesting spectacle, hence the name “evening primrose”. Blooming lasts from late spring to late summer. Oenothera is native to eastern and central North America and widely naturalized elsewhere in temperate and subtropical region. Virtually all plant parts are edible. It has multiple properties including: antispasmodic, depurative, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, sedative, diuretic, gastro protective. In addition it improves peripheral blood circulation. The seeds have a protein content of about 15%, an oil content of 24% and contain about 43% cellulose. The nutrient of greatest interest is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid (content about 7-10%). The seeds are particularly suitable for the treatment of dermatitis and eczema and, thanks to their antioxidant properties, against skin aging. Evening primrose seeds are widely used in ornithology. Its use in the diet, especially for carduelids, improves and speeds up the moulting and the expression of the natural colors of the plumage.
